IN MEMORIAM

We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of our colleague and dear friend Prof. Ivica Crnkovic, Vice-Chair of GATE’s Executive Board.

Throughout his distinguished career, Ivica was a role model, who contributed to the highest-quality science and empowered others to do so as well.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time.

The Big Data for Smart Society Institute (GATE) is the first Centre of Excellence in Bulgaria to work on integrating and extending scientific excellence and innovation in priority areas such as Big Data and Artificial Intelligence at regional and European level. GATE is an investment in people. The Institute aims to attract, inspire and cultivate the next generation Early-Stage Researchers who, under the guidance of leading scientists, will work with enthusiasm and curiosity in the field of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence.

GATE is a partner in the recently started DataPACT project and will contribute to setting a new standard for compliance, ethics, and sustainability in AI and data operations. Funded by the European Commission, DataPACT aims to provide a comprehensive framework that integrates compliance seamlessly into data and AI pipelines, fostering trust, transparency, and responsible innovation.

GATE hosted NATO workshops on AI acquisition and testing

GATE Institute hosted two NATO seminars on December 10 and 11, 2024, dedicated to the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) and data in the defence and security sectors. Organized in collaboration with NATO’s Data and AI Review Board (DARB) and NATO’s Innovation, Hybrid, and Cyber Division, the events brought together experts, policymakers, and representatives from Allied nations, government institutions, academia, and industry. These seminars positioned GATE as a key player in NATO’s innovation ecosystem and highlighted Bulgaria’s leadership in ethical AI.
