The Big Data for Smart Society Institute hereinafter referred as “GATE” is a purpose-build institute established in 2019 as an autonomous structure of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”.
GATE performs research and innovation within an area of substantial business interest and investments.
GATE’s research includes four major cutting-edge technology focuses on Artificial Intelligence and smart data-driven decision-making models – Data Visualization, Data Analysis and Data Management as well as Engineering of Big Data-Based Systems.
GATE research and innovation is organized into four strategic application areas – Future Cities, Intelligent Government, Smart Industry and Digital Health. These are listed in the Smart Specialization Strategy of Bulgaria as socially significant sectors in which Big Data and Artificial Intelligence combine the efforts of researchers, entrepreneurs, politicians, business organizations and citizens to build a knowledge-based economy and society.

We use Google Analytics information to better understand who our visitors are and it helps us to see how effective our website is and how we can improve it. We provide aggregated anonymised results to our funders as part of our reporting metrics. No information is provided to our funders which identifies you. We also use this data to compile statistical reports, we do not use this data to re-identify you and any reports generates are aggregated and anonymised.
GATE and its three Founding Organisations will not identify users or facilitate the merging of personally identifiable information with non-personally identifiable information collected through Google Analytics or its features unless you have given us affirmative consent (opted-in) to that identification or merger of data, provided that GATE and its three Founding Organisations still have such Google Analytics features supported at the time of consent and have not disabled such features prior to consent. Personal data relating to research staff, and operations staff and alumni of the GATE Institute is published on the GATE website.
As part of any recruitment process, GATE collects and processes personal data relating to job applicants. The organisation is committed to being transparent about how it collects and uses that data and to meeting its data protection obligations in compliance with the GDPR.
The purpose of processing is to organise selection procedures to recruit different categories of staff and to manage applications at the various stages of these selections. GATE has a legitimate interest in processing personal data during the recruitment process and for keeping records of the process. Processing data from job applicants allows us to manage the recruitment process, assess and confirm a candidate’s suitability for employment and decide to whom to offer a job. We may also need to process data from job applicants to respond to and defend against legal claims.
Data will be shared only among personal involved in the recruitment process, which includes the HR department, interviewers, research group leaders and the director. In addition, the IT staff will have access to data to the extent necessary for the performance of their roles. Data will not be shared with third parties.
Data will be stored in a range of different places, including on your application record, in HR management systems and on other IT systems (including e-mail). GATE has implemented generally accepted standards of security to protect your personal data. We will never transfer your personal data outside the EU without your consent.
GATE will hold your data on file as long as necessary to comply with legal obligations or for six months after the end of the recruitment process. At the end of that period, or once consent is withdrawn, relevant personal data will be deleted. We will review your personal data every year to establish whether we are still entitled to process it. If we decide that we are not entitled to do so, we will stop processing your personal data, except in an archived form in order to be able to comply with future legal obligations.
