The event, hosted by Sofia Tech Park, brought together leading voices in medicine, science, and innovation to explore how artificial intelligence is transforming healthcare.

Dr. Simeon Karpuzov, a researcher from GATE’s Digital Health team, was one of the featured speakers. In his presentation, he showcased two cutting-edge research projects currently being developed at the institute.

The first project focuses on a contactless seizure detection system, based on intelligent video monitoring. Developed in collaboration with medical experts and patients, the system provides real-time alerts for epileptic episodes, while ensuring privacy through anonymized data processing. The technology is already undergoing testing in a specialized epilepsy clinic in the Netherlands and shows promising results.

The second project is a pilot study for early detection of Alzheimer’s disease using artificial intelligence and EEG (electroencephalography) data. By analyzing brain activity and the relationships between neural regions, the team at GATE aims to identify patterns that signal predisposition to neurodegenerative diseases—before symptoms appear. The study demonstrates over 90% predictive accuracy in its early stages.

“Science should be useful—our goal is to create tools that directly improve people’s lives,” Dr. Karpuzov shared during the discussion.
