It is estimated that the data generated in a day in a current global scenario is equivalent to the data generated in the last decade. With the concept of Industry 4.0 shaping the production establishments in the modern manufacturing industry, the amount of data produced from the manufacturing sector grows rapidly.

In order to be competitive and to survive in the increasingly complex landscape of today, companies are pushed to transform into “Intelligent Enterprises” – capable of using data, people, and enterprise assets in aggregated and unique ways enabled by advanced technologies such as Big Data, IoT, Cyber-Physical Systems, etc.

In Smart Industry theme, GATE research explores the following research challenges:

  • Environmental monitoring and understanding. Data collection at scale from internal production processes, as well as from external supply and demand chains across heterogeneous data sources is a key enabler for deriving new environmental insights.
  • Explainable Artificial Intelligence. Develop more explainable models, while maintaining a high level of learning performance (prediction accuracy) and enable human users to understand, appropriately trust, and effectively manage the emerging generation of Artificially Intelligent partners.
  • Decision-making at scale. Solving decision and optimisation problems for efficient control of production processes and extracting business value from large datasets.
  • Digital twin on large datasets. Modelling production processes and customer sentiment mining and engagement to increase speed to market for new products, to build better products and services, to detect physical issues sooner, to reduce defects, to predict outcomes more accurately, to improve operations, to better serve customers and to create emerging new business models to drive revenue.
