Simeon Karpuzov, a researcher in the “Digital Health” team at the GATE Institute, has been honoured in the “Science, Technology and Healthcare” category of Forbes’ “30 under 30” ranking. He is the only scientist among the young minds revolutionizing the future with an already registered patent for an innovative scientific discovery for the benefit of people and their health care.
With invaluable experience (6 years as a physicist at the Institute of Mechanics at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and 3 years as an engineer at GlobalFoundries – the third company in the world for the production of microchips and semiconductor devices) in simulations, mathematical modelling and laser physics, Simeon registered together with his colleagues in the “Digital Health” application domain at GATE a patent for a Method and system for monitoring patients through video surveillance. The invention supports early detection and prevention of complications following an epileptic seizure.
The talented researcher is also working on a real-time seizure detection and response system, which is being tested on five patients at an epilepsy clinic in the Netherlands, and on brain network research in a project related to early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease.
