The kick-off meeting of the international project to create the Bulgarian-Romanian Observatory for Digital Media (BROD) took place on January 26-27, 2023, in Sofia. In it, the “Big Data for Smart Society” – GATE Institute – at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” heads a regional hub for combating disinformation. The project is funded by the European Health and Digital Executive Agency. Its coordinator is GATE and it includes 11 other partners from five European countries, including Agence France-Presse and Bulgarian National Television. Its duration is until May 31, 2025.
The Second GATE Big Data and Artificial Intelligence Forum (BDAIF2021) that was held on 8 – 9 December, online, highlighted the scientific results and technological achievements of the Institute in its second year and outlined the perspectives in further research and collaboration
On November 9, 2022, the first Urban Data Space in Bulgaria was officially launched, where different organizations can share and access data for developing new business products and improving services in the city.
Today, 7 April, during the meetings of the NATO foreign ministers in Brussels, the Alliance took the next step in its efforts in the area of new technologies.
During a special event, the team of GATE Institute, together with Prof. Nikolay Denkov, Minister of Education and Science, Prof. Anastas Gerdjikov, Rector of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski ” and Mr Konstantin Pavlov, Mayor of Lozenets district laid the foundations of the new building of the institute.
How to detect disinformation on social media? This is the topic of the first summer school on disinformation of the institute “Big data for smart society” (GATE), at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski ”. It was opened on July 26, 2021, in Plovdiv. The two-day event is organized jointly with the Association “Information Society Development” – ARIO.
GATE BIG DATA AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE FORUM
The first annual event of the GATE Institute took place on December 10th, 2020, online. The Big Data and Artificial intelligence forum (BDAIF) aimed to demonstrate how Big Data and Artificial Intelligence can tackle society’s problems, to enable the exchange of ideas with leading researchers – partners of GATE, to present the results and raise awareness of the activities of the institute. It was organized in collaboration between the GATE Institute, Bulgaria and Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden.

The “Big Data for Smart Society” – GATE Institute, creates the first-of-its-kind platform (COVID-19 Activity Tracker – CAT), which processes and presents empirical information on the business of individual industries and the economy as a whole, based on constraints. imposed on the human factor.
This is performed in a way that allows stakeholders to decide on their own or joint post-crisis recovery actions.
